2012 Updates

UPDATED: January 13, 2012
HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone out in internet-land. The new year is starting out as busy as ever. We got our first big snowfall of the winter here in Chicago yesterday. Funny thing about it though is that is was 52 and 55 degrees the two days before. That's Chicago for you. Let's see, what to talk about.
The Quest Continues….
My quest to learn DSLR photography and video continues. This time with a new video project. I've started working with the guys from the band ODE (
www.odemusic.com) on some video and stills. They are doing a string of live shows and studio dates and are in the process of putting a new album together. These guys are a really good band. Each of them are very solid musicians which makes it enjoyable for me. The video below is the first song that I've been able to finish, so check it out. It's actually a new song of theirs called "Man in a Glass".
NEW ALBUM RELEASED
Laura Jean Thompson: River of Doubt

This one was kinda one of those things that just happens and turns out right. I went to the studio to say hello to my friend and engineer Brian Leach, and Laura was having a session. I heard a few seconds of the track "Goin' To Hell" that Laura was preparing for this release, and I instantly had the picture in my head. Within about 30 minutes, Laura and I met, shared a quick story, wrote a part, recorded the track… and then Brian, Laura, and I probably had a drink :) This is the first track that I've ever recorded playing multi-phonics (basically singing and playing two different notes at the same time).

Album available on iTunes:

NEW BLOG ENTRIES
I've been trying to learn the world of DSLR cameras. The last three blog entries show some stills and a couple video shorts that I've done over the past couple of months.

2011 Updates

UPDATED: December 7, 2011
WRIGHTMUSIC.COM gets a little facelift: Let me know if you find anything that doesn't work in this new version of the website.
NEW VIDEO
Here's a video that was produced for the track "Goin' To Hell" that I recorded with singer/songwriter Laura Thompson. This song was the first time I've messed around with recording multi phonics which basically means that I was playing one note and singing another one through the trumpet at the same time. You really hear it between 1:25-1:40. I talk about the new album below.

NEW PHOTOGRAPHY SECTION
I've decided to learn still and video shooting, so I added this section where you can keep up with journey (however good or bad that it may turn out).

BIG WEEKEND OF PLAYING AROUND CHICAGO!

This weekend is gonna be a busy one. Friday night starting at 6pm, Katie Todd and I are helping to kick off the Chicago Pride Festival with the 2011 Backlot Bash Acoustic night. From there, I'm heading over to perform with the group Katastrofist and Martyrs. I'll be sitting in with them for 3 songs in their set which starts right at 10pm.
Then on Saturday, I'm off to Carnivale with the Sway Chicago Band and Steve Biossat. We'll be playing from around 7:30pm until around 11pm. Then, as things usually happen on a Saturday night, I'll end up blowing my face off down at The Joynt at the corner of Dearborn and Erie. I'll roll in there around 11 and be there until the sun comes up!
Check out the "
Upcoming Gigs" page for the entire calendar.
What else is happening?
Besides the live shows, I've been lucky to be in the studio a lot lately. I've been working on what will be
Katie Todd's 4th studio release. Things are going well so far and we're moving along pretty quickly. We hope to have it done in time for the summer live show run.
I've also been working a lot on writing for my own tunes! Things are starting to come together nicely. We've already hit the studio for the first session and it went well. It was great to hear the music coming to life finally. More on that later.
Lot's of other exciting stuff going on right now that I'll give more info on later like working with Shirley King (daughter of BB King), and starting to work with the Sole City Juke Band as well. Stay tuned!

WrightMusic.com has officially entered in to it's "Terrible Twos"!
First of all... Happy 2nd birthday to WrightMusic.com! And as a birthday present, every 2 year old needs a facelift right, so that's why things look a little different. I'm moving to a much cleaner, more minimal looking site, but I'm gonna start adding a lot more stuff to it. More video, more blogs, more clips, etc...
What else is happening?
I'm recording a lot right now! There are a couple CDs that just completed that I got the chance to play on. I did a track called "Going To Hell" with a singer/songwriter named Laura Thompson. I also did a couple tracks w/ the German singer/songwriter Michael Moravek. Both of these will be out soon. Lot's of other stuff happening, but I gotta run for now. More soon!

UPDATED: February 18, 2011
As usual, I’ve gone too long without an update, but here’s a quick one for you.
  • We’ve been taking some time off playing live shows with the Katie Todd Band to focus on writing and recording new tunes. We are getting ready to go back into the studio now to begin recording. More info on that soon.
  • I just recorded two songs with Michael Moravek. Michael is the lead singer of a band based in Germany called “Planeausters”. We were recording with the newly crowned 2011 Grammy Award winning engineer and producer Brian Leach! (Congrats Brian)
  • Lot’s of little things going on too, but the big one is that I think that this solo album of mine is finally gonna happen. I’ve been writing a lot, the band is set and I just need to schedule the studio time. Thanks to Carl Fischer and Jim Manley for telling me to just get off my ass and do it!
Gotta run for now, but stay tuned for more. Once the album starts I’ll have updates much more frequently. Thanks, as always, for your support!

2010 Updates

UPDATED: October 19, 2010
Not a big update this time, but I added some new shows to the calendar. I’ll be working again with Sway Chicago this weekend. Played this past weekend in Stillman Valley, IL with Sway also. I also added a few shows with Katie Todd as well so check those dates out. We’re getting ramped up to start recording again. We have a few ideas that we are almost ready to lay down in the studio, so I’m excited about that too.

What else is going on??? The first 3 tunes for my first solo CD “Just Being Ernest” are written and ready for the studio. The first official session for the album will be in a couple of weeks. I’ll be working at JoyRide Studios in Chicago, which is the same place were I did studio projects with Katie Todd, The Great Crusades, and the great soul singer Marvin Smith. I’m excited to get in and start recording. This has been something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time and it just kept not getting done. Not to make a pun on a song title, but “Now’s the Time”

UPDATED: July 28, 2010

Long time no update, but here are a bunch for you.
  • Added a new blog entry talking about everything from Summerfest, to an ABC performance, to Lilith Fair, to opening up for Huey Lewis, etc. Check it out now.
  • New shows added to the events calendar.
  • Added pics from Summerfest, ABC, and Lilith Fair
  • New videos added in the video section >> Check them out
  • Added a video from Randy Brecker in My Favorites
That’s all for now. We’re spending the next few weeks playing more shows, as well as keeping all of the momentum going from all of these great show opportunities that we have had this summer. Live CD recording show is coming up at the end of August, so we’ve got some preparation to do. We’re also doing to new writing, so there’s new tunes coming very soon.
Thanks for all of your continued support!

UPDATED: June 22, 2010
The big news this update is that we were just added as a band on the Lilith Fair 2010 tour stop in Chicago on July 17! Thanks to your voting on OurStage, we were selected out of a list of 150 bands or so to perform at Lilith Fair. Others performing are Sarah McLachlan, Heart, Kelly Clarkson, Cat Powers, Mary J Blige, and a few others.
Also, we’ll be playing at Milwaukee’s Summerfest coming up on July 1. This is billed as the largest music festival in the world with over 800 bands performing in 11 days. We’ll be playing on the Miller Light Stage at 6:30pm, and opening for Green River Ordinance and O.A.R. Should be a great show.
We just did shows at Milwaukee Pride, opening for Joan Rivers, and also at Columbus Pride. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the show to support us!
Last, thanks to Stacy Kagiwada for some great pics from the show I did with Katie Todd at the Indy Hostel in Indianapolis.
That’s all for now. Please check out the schedule for all upcoming show dates!. Hope to see you at one or more or all.

Things have been busy, which if you are musician, you know to be very thankful for. I’ve added some new stuff to the site today.
  • New pictures from recording sessions with Marvin Smith. If you don’t know Marvin, he was the lead singer on most of the albums by The Artistics. Marvin has also completed some solo works, and I’m happy to be playing on the project.
  • I add a few new show dates. Katie Todd is creating quite a buzz all over the country and we are getting some great shows as a result. The newest addition to the calendar is opening from entertainment and comedy legend Joan Rivers on June 13 @ 7:30pm for Milwaukee’s PrideFest. Check out all upcoming shows by clicking here.
  • I hadn’t done a new blog post in a while, so I threw one of those in for good measure.

THAT’s ALL FOR NOW. Thanks for your support.

    UPDATED: May 4, 2010
Just a couple of new updates for you.
  • I head to Milwaukee with Katie Todd on Thursday, May 6. We are doing 2 different things that day. The first is a live radio interview/performance on WUWM 89.7FM. It can also be heard online too http://www.wuwm.com/listen/index.php After the radio spot, we head to Shank Hall for a show Thursday evening. Check the events page for the venue info and time.
  • I’ve added a few new show dates to the calendar as well. Milwaukee Summerfest is a big one, and I’m happy to be heading back out to New York in September! Check the events page for all the upcoming shows.
  • Today, May 4, would have been the 82nd birthday of the great trumpet player Maynard Ferguson. I added a clip to “My Favorites” section of Maynard performing “Caruso”.

This was inspired sitting at a hotel in Lugano, Switzerland where we having dinner outdoors. Maynard heard a version of it by Lucio Dalia. Very enchanting atmosphere with Dalia in the background, I’m sure those of us who were there will never forget!” - Ron Oswanski (Former MF Pianist)
  • UPDATED: April 8, 2010
Just a quick update... The new album by the Great Crusades titled “Fiction to Shame” that I did a guest spot on is available for pre-order now on iTunes. I sat in on a song called “Smoked a Million Beers”. The direction that I was given in the studio was play anything you want, but sound like you’ve had a few drinks. It was fun to be involved with these guys, and I hope that the album does really well. This is their 7th studio album. They’ll be starting their European tour on April 15, and you can read more about them at www.thegreatcrusades.com.

No, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. I am actually updating the website! Things have been a little busy. You can read about everything that has been going on in the newest blog entry. Click here to read it now. Otherwise, here is what’s new on the site today.
  • Added a few new show dates. New dates in Chicago, Columbus, and Madison. Click here to view the schedule.
  • Added new pictures from a few of the shows I’ve done in the past couple of weeks. First, I sat in with Jim Manley in St. Louis. Then I have a couple pictures from the show that I just did with Katie Todd at Uncommon Ground in Chicago.
I have a bunch of new video that I’ll be adding to the site really soon. I just haven’t had time to pull it off the camera yet. I’ve got video from shows in Chicago and Milwaukee. I also have video from the show that my buddy Carl Fischer did at The Joynt in Chicago. I’ll get around to that stuff soon.
That’s it for now I guess.

UPDATED: February 27, 2010
We’ve been filling up the calendar for the next few months. We’ve had a couple of weeks off from playing shows, while we get some things ready to go, but in a couple of weeks we are going to be ready to hit the ground running.
I’ll be playing with Katie Todd quite a bit of the next few months, all leading up to a show on August 20 at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Michigan. This show will be special, because it will be recorded and released as a live CD. Check out the events page for a list of all the upcoming shows. There are more on the way too that we are waiting to confirm the details. (More details on my
events page)
Also, if you are in the Chicago area on March 5, make sure you make it to “The Joynt” to hear my buddy
Carl Fischer and his band, the Organic Groove Ensemble. Carl just released his CD “Adverse Times” and it is some pretty good stuff. If you don’t know Carl, he is a phenomenal trumpet player and has quite the resume including performing with Maynard Ferguson, Billy Joel, Elton John, and many others.
You can get tickets at the door, or for a little bit cheaper
online here. I’ll be there, so stop by and say hello!!! That’s all for now!

I’m also performing in a play with the Silent Theatre company in Chicago. The play is called “The Set Up”, and its a story about a boxer in the late 1920s. Its only a 3 piece pit band with an upright bass, piano, and myself on trumpet. We are performing the show 3 days a week, every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday between now and October 4. We are performing the show at the Prop Theatre, so look for the Prop Theatre on the events page to come out and see the show.

Wow!!! What a week. As I wrote in my last update, I got to meet up with my friend and fellow trumpet player Carl Fischer. Carl is currently, and for the past 4 years has been, on tour with Billy Joel. I met Carl back in 1996 and besides being an incredible trumpet player, Carl is just an all around nice guy. I always love the chance to catch up with him.
In addition to hangin’ with Carl, I got to go to the Billy Joel/Elton John concert on Tuesday. What a show! It was a great experience. I personally think that Billy Joel is a great example of the difference between a rock star and a REAL performer. So much energy and charisma on stage. I was able to get some great pictures at the show. Some during the show, some backstage shots, and a couple from the after party.
The new CD for the Katie Todd Band, Mumbled Speech, is selling really well, and if you haven’t gotten your copy yet you can get it right here. It has started to get some play on major Chicago radio which is a great feeling. Please take a minute to check it out. We are really proud of it.

It’s been a pretty busy week. In fact it has been a pretty busy last 3 weeks. This week, on Wednesday, I had a great hang with a friend of mine and phenomenal trumpet player Carl Fischer. Carl has been out on tour with Billy Joel for about 4 years now among his other amazing credits. Its always great to catch up with Carl. His site is being updated right now, but you can check him out at www.myspace.com/carlfischer. Carl is working on a new CD right now and I’ll definitely let you all know when its available.
Thursday night, 30 Helens had a show at Reggie’s. Thanks to everyone that came out to the show. It has been a little while since 30 Helens has been playing out, because of all the time we spent finalizing our debut CD, Agree (which you can pick up here).
Friday night, I hit the road with the Katie Todd Band for a show in Racine, Wisconsin. I really feel that this was one of the best performances we have had to date, and there were some moments in the show that I felt really great about. The version of Hallelujah that we do was probably the highlight of the show for me. We have a recording from the sound board, so I might be able to put some clips up for you when we get the disk.
